NGA Manufacturing Report Cover - 'Making' Our Future“The Obama administration is committed to supporting American businesses and workers in advanced manufacturing, which will help create jobs and strengthen our economy while boosting our global competitiveness,” said Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank. “The Commerce Department is proud to have partnered with the National Governors Association to produce a report that will undoubtedly prove valuable in helping our nation’s governors grow their local economies.”

“Making” Our Future: What States are Doing to Encourage Growth Opportunities in Manufacturing through Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Investment

EXCERPT:

As a result of the NGA Policy Academy, the eight states:

  • Established new programs: Connecticut has an innovation voucher program that is providing $800,000 to help connect small and medium-sized businesses to partners and universities, as a way to encourage them to take up regular R&D and innovation activities;
  • Redesigned organizations or created new ones: The Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Alliance ensures a consistent industry voice about the issues and policy priorities, and seeds a strong connection among manufacturers, suppliers, financiers, academic research centers and universities, and key government agencies;
  • Passed legislation: Legislation passed in California renewed and extended the community college initiative responsible for funding manufacturing and other regional industry workforce partnerships. In Connecticut, a bipartisan legislative advanced manufacturing caucus was launched to identify top issues for legislative action in 2013; and,
  • Pushed through funding allocated for their manufacturing priorities: In Massachusetts, $1 million was appropriated to support the Massachusetts Advanced Manufacturing Futures Fund, for initiatives across five high-priority areas.
