Commerce Department Investment Boosts Emerging Medical Cluster in Greensburg, Kentucky

WASHINGTON - U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke today announced a $1 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant to the city of Greensburg, Kentucky to make vital water infrastructure improvements needed to support an emerging medical cluster and other commercial development in Greensburg, Ky. The project is expected to create 88 jobs, save 208 jobs and attract $22 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.

"The Obama administration is committed to encouraging the development of ecosystems where high-growth industries are nourished," Locke said. "This EDA grant will help Greensburg capitalize on an emerging medical cluster that will create higher-skill, living-wage job opportunities for the region's workers."

Specifically, the EDA investment will fund the construction of line extensions to serve a new hospital, dental clinic and medical office building, a section of line that has deteriorated will be replaced, and improvements will be made to the city wastewater treatment plant.
