Commerce Department Invests More Than $1.5 Million in 11 States to Strengthen Economic Growth with the Help of University-based Initiatives

Universities in CT, ME, MD, MA, NY, OH, PA, PR, RI and WA to Receive Funding

WASHINGTON - U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke today announced more than $1.5 million in U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) grants to universities in eleven states to support the University Center Economic Development Program, a partnership between the federal government and academia that helps to make the varied and vast resources of universities available to local communities.

"The Obama administration strongly supports the job-creating, innovative research and development that takes place at our nation's colleges and universities," Locke said. "These EDA grants will help to connect communities working to grow their economies with the vast resources available through our educational institutions."

The University Center program provides local government and nonprofit organizations with resources to better analyze the economic needs of their communities.

The grants include:

  • $135,000 to Boise State University
  • $110,100 to the University of Connecticut
  • $125,000 to the University of Southern Maine
  • $100,000 to Towson University of Maryland
  • $100,000 to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore
  • $159,550 to the University of Massachusetts Amherst
  • $150,000 to Cornell University of New York
  • $150,319 to Cleveland State University
  • $150,000 to The Pennsylvania State University
  • $125,000 to the University of Puerto Rico
  • $102,116 to the University of Rhode Island
  • $140,000 to Washington State University
