Sioux City, Iowa's Receives U.S. EDA Grant to Support Local Economic Recovery Strategy

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) today announced a $40,000 grant to the city of Sioux City, Iowa, to help support the development of an economic recovery strategy following a major plant closure.

"The Obama administration is dedicated to helping get people back to work following the closure of a major employment hub," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development John R. Fernandez. "This EDA grant will create a strategy for economic recovery in order to foster new businesses and accelerate innovation and entrepreneurship in the region, leading to living-wage job opportunities."

"Downtown Sioux City is the hub of commercial activity for the entire tri-state metro area. This EDA investment will allow us to move forward with this key strategic planning effort, leading to significant job growth and new capital investment in the downtown area," said Christopher Myres, Economic Development Specialist, the city of Sioux City.

This EDA investment supports the development of an economic recovery strategy that will review local and regional strategic plans, marketing tools and communication strategies; analyze local and regional economic development programs, assets and tools; analyze the overall economic development delivery system and stakeholders in the Sioux City region; and provide recommendations and best practice case studies for targeted benefits and maximization of overall economic development outcomes in Sioux City.
