Shoshone-Paiute Tribes Receive U.S. EDA Assistance to Support Rural Entrepreneurship in Owyhee, Nevada

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) today announced a $100,000 grant to the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation of Owyhee, Nev., to conduct a feasibility study and market analysis to determine the most effective use of vacant retail space in the Trade and Travel Center of the Tribes.

"EDA is committed to supporting the entrepreneurial needs of Native Americans," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development John R. Fernandez. "This project will support the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes by funding a study to best utilize local resources to facilitate commercial activity and spur economic growth."

"A feasibility study and market analysis will determine the most suitable types of businesses that can thrive in the region while fulfilling the needs of the customers," said Herman Atkins, Administrator, the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation.

This EDA grant will support the advancement of rural entrepreneurship in Nevada. Due to the geographic isolation of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes lack the infrastructure that is available in urban areas. This investment will support the needs of business enterprises that will provide sustainable employment opportunities and meet consumer needs.
