Spotlight: U.S. Department of Commerce Invests to Help Establish Welding Technology Training Facility in Tallahassee, Florida Opportunity Zone

On July 19, Assistant Secretary John Fleming announced EDA’s $1.25 million grant to Tallahassee Community College of Tallahassee, Florida, to help establish the Welding Technologies Laboratory at the Kim B. Williams Advanced Manufacturing Training Center. The project, to be located in a Tax Cuts and Jobs Act designated Opportunity Zone, will be matched with $313,692 in local investment.

This past 4th of July, Americans had more meatless options for their barbecues – enter the “Impossible Burger.” This vegetable-based product that looks, feels, smells and tastes like a hamburger has attracted more than $700 million in funding from investors. It has currently spread to more than 1,400 outlets in the United States, including the fast food chains White Castle and Burger King, where one can purchase a meatless burger.

EDA has $587 million available for disaster recovery grants in communities experiencing economic distress or other economic harm resulting from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria and wildfires and other federally declared natural disasters occurring in calendar year 2017.
