U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $880,000 for Infrastructure Improvements to Support Business Development in South Carolina

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $880,000 grant to the city of Bishopville, South Carolina, to make water infrastructure improvements needed to support business expansion and development. According to grantee estimates, the project is expected to create 150 jobs and generate $12 million in private investment.

“We commend the city of Bishopville on their leadership to upgrade local infrastructure critical to the business community,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Regional Affairs Dennis Alvord. “This project will support business expansion plans while incentivizing new businesses to locate in the region.”

The project funds construction of a new pump station to support the expansion of a highly specialized commercial laundry operation that serves the health care industry and will help drive new business growth. This project was made possible by the regional planning efforts led by the Santee-Lynches Council of Governments. EDA funds the Santee-Lynches Council of Governments to bring together the public and private sectors to create an economic development roadmap to strengthen the regional economy, support private capital investment and create jobs.
