U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $790,000 to Support Tribal Disaster Recovery and Resiliency in Perkins, Oklahoma

WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $790,000 grant to the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma in Perkins, Oklahoma, to help develop and implement disaster recovery and resiliency strategies.

This grant will support the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma and tribal partners across the state by providing technical assistance to establish a model for tribal energy planning and develop an energy-related workforce development program.

“The Economic Development Administration works closely with Tribal Nations in Oklahoma and across the country to support locally led economic development,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo. “This grant will support the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma by providing technical assistance in developing recovery and resiliency strategies, supporting a strong, resilient Tribal economy.”

This project is funded under the Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2023, which provided EDA with $483 million in additional Economic Adjustment Assistance (EAA) Program funds for disaster relief and recovery for areas that received a major disaster declaration under the Robert T. Stafford Act as a result of Hurricanes Ian and Fiona, wildfires, flooding, and other natural disasters occurring in calendar years 2021 and 2022.
