Project Description:
New Energy New York is utilizing a $63.7 million BBBRC grant to accelerate innovation in battery technology and transform New York’s Southern Tier into a global hub of energy storage manufacturing. This region, and the legacy manufacturers that once thrived there, have suffered due to deindustrialization over the past several decades; however, momentum is shifting with the launch of New York’s first lithium-ion gigafactory in Endicott, New York, which will not only create new jobs and revitalize the region but also enable and accelerate the country’s clean energy transition.
As of September 2024, the coalition has made significant strides in achieving its vision of bolstering battery technology innovation, manufacturing and workforce development:
- Significant progress towards workforce development for battery manufacturing programs, led by the launch of the first-of-its-kind Battery Academy program, which has trained more than 1,200 participants to enter the growing battery workforce.
- The coalition has developed the foundation to support and accelerate clean energy innovation and entrepreneurship in the region through a variety of programming, including student startup experiences, mentorship for startups, technical assistance vouchers, and the nation’s first battery and energy storage startup accelerator program, ChargeUp. In its first two years, the coalition supported over 30 startups, which have raised over $40 million in follow-on funding.
- The coalition was selected to receive $15 million for two years and up to $160 million over 10 years as an inaugural recipient of the National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines program. This award and designation will bolster the region’s efforts to accelerate clean energy innovation in the state.
